Meet Walt Moore
Walt is a local potter, teacher, poet, photographer and nature lover. After majoring in biology and ecology in college, Walt began a 30 year career as an Environmental Scientist. He worked as a contractor for the government to mitigate projects that involved environmental and conservation concerns. Walt’s art clearly shows his profound love for the natural world.
Walt worked with clay as a young boy and revisited this interest much later when a high school friend and potter encouraged him to try the pottery wheel at his friend’s studio. Walt’s friend, after witnessing his immediate aptitude for the wheel, continued to encourage him and light the spark that became the passion for wheel pottery that Walt has to this day.
Walt considers his art a form of alchemy, born from his background in science, chemistry, and physics. His love of nature and clear artistic flair—a perfect balance influenced by both the right and left hemispheres of the brain is evident.
Watching Walt quickly form a vase from a lump of clay on the wheel was incredibly impressive for this writer. The energy in the space was both intentional and peaceful…a zen-like environment that lent itself to an amazing sensory experience! The sound of the wheel spinning, gentle music in the background, the earthy smell of the clay, the obvious texture of the clay at varying stages of being worked and the occasional taste of clay spattle thrown from the wheel…with a twinkle in his eyes and a serene smile, Walt says, “pottery is the most zen thing I’ve ever done.”
Walt sells his pottery from his studio in Red Rocks Ranch in Monument. He makes cremation urns for a local church and accepts custom orders for other pottery projects ranging from everyday functional work to artistic creations. You can also find his pottery at the annual Palmer Lake Arts Council “Off The Wall” event. He joined the PLAC to increase awareness and passion for the local arts.
Walt is accepting students at his home studio. He prefers one student at a time, giving his time and attention to the teaching method he has perfected. If you are interested in finding out more about Walt, taking pottery classes, or purchasing pottery, you can message him at waltmoore1@msn.com
