love for the land
The lifestyle he is living
Few men now understand
As he coaxes a living
From the land
His roots like his crops are deep
In that prairie soil
Planted by his ancestors
Through blood and sweat and toil
Honest men of character
Who stood when called to stand
Driven by hard work and faith
And a love for the land

Inspiration for “Love for the Land”
The inspiration for the “Love for the Land” sculpture and poem was my dad who lived a few months short of one hundred years on the ranch my granddad homesteaded in the early nineteen hundreds. The old house where he was born in 1924 is still on the ranch across the driveway from where he passed into eternity. With a love for the Lord, the land and critters, he spent his life tending and keeping it and died within sixty feet of where he was born. He was still working at the age of ninety seven and his mind was as sharp and clear as ever when he passed. In almost one hundred years he only moved sixty feet. It had been his desire to die next to the old house where he was born. Now he’s resting in the land of tall grass, fat cows and streets of gold.
